Middlebury Gap is a special place: the environmental legacy of Joseph Battell, one of Vermont’s early and prominent conservationists; the intersection of two National Wilderness areas; home to the Breadloaf Campus of Middlebury College; and, nearby, the site of Robert Frost’s cabin. Now, some folks want to destroy the Midd Gap to erect industrial wind turbines to “make visible the breeze, and our sense of responsibility.” I believe the truly responsible action is to preserve this ecological treasure and not sacrifice it as a symbolic gesture.
